Courtney Downman is a Canadian glass artist. She first began her glass practice once enrolled in the Craft and Design program at Sheridan College in 2012, and has been working in the medium ever since.
In her work, Downman explores the balance between fragility and rigidity in a material we often consider extremely fragile. Her signature series of blown and saw carved glass vessels are created by an exceptionally intricate process. First carving into the glass using a water fed diamond saw, each piece begins as a smooth and translucent bubble that has been coloured and shaped. Once cooled, the textured lines in each of her works is delicately carved, cutting the glass away to reveal the final form. Each piece is then sandblasted to create the resolved matte finish.
In addition to her personal practice, Courtney Downman worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Sheridan glass program upon her graduation, and in 2016 was awarded a two-year Artist-in-Residence fellowship at the Living Arts Centre glass studio in Mississauga, ON. Most recently, Downman has worked as an Artist-in-Residence in the Sheridan College glass studio and has again earned a position as Artist-in-Residence at the Living Arts Centre studio in Mississauga where she continues to create her latest glass works.
