"Based in Ohsweken, Ontario on Six Nations of the Grand River, I am a proud Turtle Clan member from the Mohawk Nation. My artistic journey is deeply rooted in exploring and expressing my heritage through the traditional art of beading. Embracing Longhouse teachings and traditional ways has been a meaningful and transformative path for me—one that required courage as I navigated a departure from the Anglican faith in which I was raised. In doing so, I have come to a deeper understanding of my identity and sense of belonging.
I first learned to bead in my twenties, taught by Virginia Hill in the basement of the Ohsweken Baptist Church. Since then, my work has grown and evolved, with pieces featured in the Ontario Arts Museum in Toronto and the Hamilton Art Gallery. I am grateful for the support of my parents, Thomas and Olive Martin, who have been part of this journey.
I’m currently looking forward to my next project: creating a full set of traditional clothing, crafted from head to toe. This new chapter is an exciting continuation of reconnecting with and honoring my culture through art."
