Known for figurative explorations of hybrid creatures, animals, and human figures—both fictional and historical—artist Nathan Eugene Carson’s subjects emerge from richly pigmented surfaces, shedding light on narratives that weave together themes of Black identity and history, personal memories, and charged symbolism. Carson foregrounds intimate moments of joy, reflection, death, and mourning in his work, often in relation to systemic racism and discrimination. Together, his paintings and mixed-media works on paper delineate complex, multifaceted experiences that inform inherited resistance and culture with a reinforced sense of promise.

Made in conjunction with the Art Gallery of Hamilton, this 17th title in the Power Plant Pages series features installation images of Carson’s exhibition Cut from the same cloth, presented at The Power Plant, Toronto (September 26, 2020–January 3, 2021), its second iteration at the Meridian Arts Centre, North York (October 8–November 28, 2021), and his installation Black Carnival, which forms part of Carson’s year-long artist residency at the Art Gallery of Hamilton (April 15, 2022–March 19, 2023). These images accompany a foreword written by former Director and Artistic Director of The Power Plant Gaëtane Verna, an interview between Carson and Armina Howada Mussa, and texts by Melissa Bennett, Laura Demers, Joséphine Denis, and Stéphane Martelly.
